A Name Change as well as Laughter

Genesis 17

God spoke to Abram again but this time it was a little bit different than the past. Abram was now 99 years old now and he still did not have a child like God promised. God told Abram that he is the Almighty God, walk before me and be blameless. Abram fell on his face in reverence for God. God changed his name from Abram to Abraham. Abram means “high father” and now his name Abraham means “father of multitude.” The name of someone in the Old Testament is very important because it shows what type of person they are. A name meant a lot during that time and now God was showing Abram that his name will be what is going to happen in his life, having a child and being the father of many.  God tells Abraham that he will not only have a child but that he will be exceedingly fruitful, I will make you into a nation, and kings will come from you. Sarai’s name gets changed too. It goes from Sarai to Sarah. God made a covenant in Genesis 15 with Abraham to show that he was serious about what will happen through Abraham. In this chapter God told Abraham that there will be a sign to show of this covenant for all the generations to come that God is serious with his covenants.God told Abraham in specific detail about him and Sarah having a son but you know what Abraham did was he started to laugh at God because he and Sarah were so old. God did not send fire down to consume Abraham for laughing at him but instead he said no this is going to happen and his name will be Isaac.

God Sticks to his Promises

Like yesterday’s lesson, God’s plan is so better than ours. Time flew by and no child, but God wanted to wait so Abraham, Sarah, and everyone who reads about this to know that God supernaturally is the one who was in charge of this event. He wanted to show himself to not only the old couple but to the world. God has shown himself to the world through not only the Old Testament but also through Jesus Christ who is God in flesh. God sent his promise that he made in Genesis 15 to the world. What does God promise us? He promises to be faithful to his children. What are your desires? Are you seeking after God’s will and through that are you being patient in his will.
