God Saves the Day or at Least for Lot

Genesis 19

Sodom and Gomorrah was getting its deserved judgment by God. The city was so wicked that the two angels that came to rescue Lot and his family that the men in the city had some perverse intention with them. The people of Sodom were so far gone that they had no guilt or conviction when it came to sin. They were in moral decay as well as rebellion from God.God tugs on the hearts of people but the more people rebel and do their own thing the more that they do not have guilt with sin like they used to. Maybe you lied about something or stole something for the first time and you felt horrible about it. As time went on and you lied more and more and stole more and more the less you will feel guilty about it. Sodom was so far gone that they desired to sin so much that they were going to break down Lot’s door to get to them. Lot had a chance to warn his soon to be son in laws about God’s destruction and judgment but they looked at Lot as if he was joking with them. He tried and now he and his family had to flee town because it was going to start getting crazy in that town.

A Pillar of Salt vs 23-29

Judgment was taking place and all the inhabitants of the city were killed by sulfur and fire coming down from heaven. The angels gave Lot and his wife and his family the warning of not to look back or stop in any way (vs 17). We see in this section that judgment was going on, they were moving to the location that they were called to live and Lot’s wife looked back. Because she looked back she became a pillar of salt. You may be thinking that this is harsh because all she did is look back, but the warning was from God not to do it and she disobeyed him. Not only do we see her disobeying God but also her love for the sin. We have a tendency to hold onto certain sins, the ones we can’t stand to let go. We may subside it and it may only flare up once in a while but sin is sin and it can hold us down and destroy us.May we not look back on to our sin but look forward to the redemption from sin which is in Jesus Christ. Hebrews 12:1-2 tells us, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Jesus died for all of our sins, but it is us who cling on to certain ones that hold us from persuing God with no baggage. The good thing is that he can take our baggage at any time. Let us throw it to him and say it is yours. Let us run this Christian race with freedom.
