A New Song

Song of Songs (Solomon) 1

We come to a new book today, the Song of Solomon or Song of Songs. This book seems to be one that is overlooked in our Bible readings and can make some feel uncomfortable because of the content. Gary Brady in his commentary said about the location of Song of Songs as “Some like that order, saying Ecclesiastes does a negative, preparatory, convicting work while the Song is more positive, complete and edifying. Song of Songs is part of the wisdom literature section of the Bible. When we come to the Song we need to know that it is about love but not just any love the love of God and the way we can see his love towards us the church. Christ is the bridegroom and we are the bride, Revelation 19:7 says, “Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready.” I believe this book is an image of the true love relationship as we can read that Christ is the bridegroom and we the church are the bride. He loves us unconditionally.

A Love for the Lord

In Revelation 2:4 John wrote this to the church in Ephesus, “But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.”  As the church was busy doing work, they had their eyes of the motive of that work, Christ. We need to have a love for Christ and the book of Song of Songs shows how we should desire to love Christ, just like a bride and groom love each other. We should love Jesus, be appealed to Jesus, even attracted to who Christ is. Christ is beauty and glory; which this book portrays. Try to see the love of God in this book as well as be encouraged with your love for the Lord.
