Walking in the Light

Being a little boy I had a hard time falling asleep at night, not because of being hyper so that I had to calm down, I had a hard time going to sleep because I was restless.

On more than one occasion I was afraid of 1 of 2 things. Either being a afraid of the dark or being afraid of a monster. For a little bit over a year I had a hard time falling asleep because I thought a monster was going to get me. I was at a friend’s birthday party when I was 7, being the youngest kid, watching scary movies, I wanted to fit in, I wanted to be cool like all the other guys because I wanted to show them that I was just as cool. Boy was I wrong!

That night I couldn’t fall asleep because one of the movies we watched had this scary troll-like monster that came out of the walls in the house (I still remember the scene of the movie to this very day!), and I thought that it was for sure going to get me! I wanted to run away from the dark as much as possible!

I wanted comfort and security in the light, because I knew then, that the monster wasn’t going to get me while the sun was out.

I wanted to run away from darkness and into the light. This can also be true of us in our walk with Christ, but what can also be true is the opposite. Too many of us are running in the opposite direction. We are running into darkness from the light instead of it being the other way around.

It’s our natural tendency to run into darkness, but why is it that when we were young and innocent, mostly unaware of the things going on in the world, that we were so anxious to run from the dark and into the light?

Being now that we are more aware of our sin and the sin around us, that should cause us to run towards Christ.

1 John 1:6 says, “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” Verses 7 & 8 go on to say, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

What is the truth of these verses? Well for one, those who are in the light are those who have been cleansed by the blood of Christ, and those who are in the dark are those who live for selfish gain. There is such a great comparison to darkness and light. The main fact is that these 2 cannot co-exist with each other because one is going to dominate over the over.

If I turn a light on in a dark room, the light overwhelms the darkness and it is no longer dark. If I am in a lit room and turn the light off, darkness will ultimately rule over the light. They cannot co-exist, nor will they ever be able to.

You will either walk in complete darkness, or walk in complete light. Which will you choose?

You will either serve Satan or serve God. There is no middle ground. Matthew 6:24 says you cannot serve 2 masters, you will serve one or the other. So which will you choose to serve today? Which have you chosen to serve? If you are serving God, then serve Him whole-heartedly. If you are serving Satan, you are serving him whole-heartedly and the truth is not in you. You will not serve both of them at the same time. And ultimately you cannot serve yourself and God.

And then 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from unrighteousness.”

Walk in the light, just as He is in the light!
