Do We Belong to Jesus?

By Luke Sanders

1John 2:3-6;

  • “And how can we be sure that we belong to him? By obeying his commandments. If someone says, “I belong to God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and does not live in the truth. But those who obey God’s word really do love him. That is the way to know whether or not we live in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Christ did.”

Have you ever wondered whether or not you are truly saved? This is a question that will plague a Christian’s mind at many different times in his or her walk, it is not until you completely place your trust in God that it will go away. What do we do in the mean time while we are growing in our faith, what do we do to remind ourselves that we truly belong to God? The scripture above gives us a very clear cut answer… obey God’s word. In this portion of scripture John explains not only the way to see whether we are God’s but also whether we are not. He states that a person must be in obedience to the word of God in order to belong to Him, and if they claim that they belong to the Lord yet do not obey Him they are liars! What does God’s word say about liars, in Revelation 21:8 it says that their doom is the lake of fire. In Proverbs 6:16-17 it says that God hates a lying tongue, hate is a very strong word but in this case the Bible says that God HATES lying. Why am I pointing all of this scary stuff out to you guys? I want you all to remember how important it is to walk the talk and not just to be a Christian in words. Now that we have identified how we are to remind ourselves that we belong to God and how to tell if we do not, what should we do to make sure that we stay in God’s hands?

As a Christian we need to make sure that we are always checking up on ourselves so that we are always growing, if a Christian is not growing, he or she is shrinking. Chuck Smith once said that the Christian walk is like climbing a greased pole, if you are not moving upward you are sliding back down. The way that we continue to grow is by reading and studying the word of God and most of all obeying the word of God. If you are not in the word of God daily how will you know what to obey? My challenge to you today is to examine yourself, are you growing in your relationship with the Lord or shrinking? Study and obey God’s word so that you know that you truly belong to God, if you don’t, fix the problem. If you don’t know how, read God’s word so you can find out. Our time is getting closer and closer we do not have the time to mess around any longer, sell out completely to God, nothing else matters.

Maranatha!!!
