Who is Your Father?
1st John 3:9-10
In scripture we (as mere humans) are not suppose to judge others in this way: (Making a final determination as to someone’s eternal destination). However we are instructed to access as to whether someone is currently walking with God or not, thereby allowing us to know who we should have close relationships with; such as close friends, tight business partners, and of course who we will eventually choose to marry.
Check out what God’s word says in these three passages:
- 2nd Corinthians 6:14a (Do not be bound together with unbelievers)
- 1st Corinthians 15:33 (Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”)
- Jesus says in Matthew 7:16-17 (You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.)
As we can clearly see we are commanded in scripture not to be “bound together” together with unbelievers. Therefore we need some way of determining who is most likely a true believer. Jesus tells us that just as one can tell what sort of fruit tree one has by simply checking out the fruit it produces, we can tell if someone is Godly or not by simply observing what their life produces (what they say, and do).
Today’s passage gives us a little more insight into this subject, let’s check it out:
- 1st John 3:9-10 (No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him, and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother)
This passage answers the question; if someone is a believer or not by answering the following question: Who’s your spiritual Daddy? It also gives us a very specific answer: If one is truly born again and thereby a child of God then they will have the Spirit of God dwelling within them, and producing a changed life. From this changed life we will see these three character traits:
- They will not make a practice of habitually sinning.
- They will practice righteousness.
- They will love others.
As we go about our day today let us use this illumination from God’s word to see things with greater clarity. So that we can examine ourselves to insure we are walking close to The Lord and make Godly choices concerning our relationships.
