CRUX Daily: Obeying Our Earthly Parents to Glorify Our Heavenly Father

Read: Ephesians 6:1-4

Reflect: What is your role in the the family.

Request (Prayer): Lord, help me to bring honor to my parents in all that I do.

In Ephesians 6, we see the role of both the child and the parent. To answer today’s question, “What is your role in the family,” is founding Ephesians 6:1, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Do you see the answer? There it is! Right in front of us! We are to obey our parents, but it doesn’t just stop there, it says to, “obey our parents IN THE LORD.” What is the difference between obeying our parents and obeying our parents in the Lord?

There is a line of authority for each person in the world. The rank of authority in life is, obeying God above everyone/everything else, and second is obeying our parents. Now, what if my mom or dad says something that contradicts what God says? Do I still obey my parent? At that point, you must obey God above all else, but that does not give excuse to disobey your parents in a wrongful way.

God is the final authoritative person, and we answer to Him before anyone else. But the role of the parent is to train you up in the ways of the Lord, so that your days may be long and prosperous. This again, does not give excuse to rebel against your parents, but to lovingly tell them that you answer to God before them.

A lot of times, we don’t understand that God has placed our parents here on earth to point us to our Father in Heaven. Did you know that God is also our Father? In the sense that He watches over us, He provides for us, He protects us, and He guides and directs us through life’s struggles. And did you know that your earthly parents are there to also help you along the way? It’s true! Yet, why do we have such a hard time obeying and listening to our parents guidance and help in life? It’s the same reason we don’t listen to God. Because we think we know what is best for us, when the reality is, we have no clue!

It is better to obey your parent son earth, so you can live long in the land, rather than to try your own method, fall short and lose out on the blessings of life. DO you want to prosper in this world? Do you want to live long on earth? Then start by obeying your parents and giving glory to our Heavenly Father.
