I Get Distracted When I Worship! What Do I Do?
Read: Matthew 15:7-9 and Amos 5:21-24
Reflect: If we do not worship God in spirit and truth then we worship God in vain and God hates vain worship. Have you ever “gone through the motions” of worship?
Request: Lord, keep me from worshipping You in a wrong way.
Have you ever during worship had your mouth move and say the words from the song but you are thinking about something totally different? You may be thinking about how hungry you are and what sounds good to eat or maybe you were reliving a conversation from earlier. Now you know you are just mouthing a praise song but your heart is not in it. This is exactly what was going on when Jesus said this in Matthew 15. He was quoting the prophet Isaiah.
We can’t fool God, even if your motion of singing out seems good but what does the heart say? We need to genuinely seek after God and that happens not just when the worship band gets on stage and strums the first note. It starts with a desire to know God and being thankful for what He has done and continues to do.
Another thing that can hinder us from genuinely worshiping God is sin. If there is unconfessed sin in your life, that will be a hindrance to true worship. That is why we should confess our sins and ask the Lord to prepare us so we can have genuine worship.
Distractions with our thoughts and even those around us can hinder corporate worship. I get distracted very easily and that might be because of my undiagnosed ADD! I pray and ask the Lord to help me so I do not get distracted and I plant myself by people that are serious about that time and they do not want to take it for granted. Praying would be the biggest help when you are distracted. It helps focus your attention to God whom you worship.
