Call on the Lord
Psalm 4
One of the most frustrated things I think is when I call my wife and I know she is there but she does not answer. Even though I know she is not doing it on purpose, most likely she has her hands full or could not get to it in time. I think the reason why I get so frustrated is because I wanted her to answer when I called.
In this passage David is calling out to God and wants him to answer him. It is not that God was being silent but David needed to trust him and let God answer him.
David’s Devotion Time
This Psalm takes place just like the last one, right when David’s own son Absalom tried to take over the kingdom. This was a very sad time for David as he was already old and his own son was kicking him out of the kingdom.
This Psalm shows David’s heart when he went to the Lord. A couple things we should know is 1) David went to God expecting God to show himself. 2) David knows that God has followed through in the past, and God will follow through again. 3) He trusts the Lord even in this hard time. 4) Only true joy comes from God. This says a lot because this time is considered one of the depressing times in David’s life. Paul had this same attitude as he was in prison and wrote Philippians where he says, rejoice again I say rejoice. 5) True peace only comes from the Lord. Paul also wrote in Philippians 4:7, “The peace of God that surpasses understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Our devotion time should mimic this. We should come to God expecting him to reveal himself to us. He reveals himself through his word and his very presence. We should come knowing that God has followed through in the past and what makes this time different? We should come to a place of complete dependence on the Lord. We should realize that he is our TRUE joy and he is the giver of TRUE peace. We will never truly ever get to this place as David when he went through a tough time unless we spend quiet time with the Lord. Let God speak to you through his word and through the quietness. David called on the Lord, not just when it was tough but all the time. We need to call on the name of the Lord everyday.
