Keep Watch!
1st Chronicles 26
Have you ever learned about how certain things function, maybe it is the government or maybe it is a school. But, each person has a specific job. Just like the military, each person needs to perform their tasks for the whole group to be able to accomplish its purpose. This reminds me of the Christian unity that we should have. In 1st Corinthians 12:12 it says, “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.”
In this chapter we see that David appoints gatekeepers and treasurers to be over those things.
A Gatekeeper
In verses 1-19 we see a list of names of those who would be responsible for watching the different gates around the temple. The job of a gatekeeper would be to keep watch at the entrances to the temple area by making sure that no one who is unauthorized would come in. That means someone who would try to cause a disturbance or problem, anyone who would do idol worship in the Temple, and they would serve as security a the gates. They were given the task of safeguarding the Temple as well as the things in the temple.
If you notice one name in particular, Obed-edom, who was one of the leaders over the gate keeping. Remember in 1st Chronicles 13, he was the one who housed the Ark for a few months after Uzzah died because he touched the Ark. At the end of the chapter we see that the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all of his household. How true is that when we read in verse 8 of chapter 26 that he 62 sons who were qualified of service. This was his family, all serving the Lord. What a blessing that is to see, a family together serving the Lord.
The Treasurers and Administration
In verses 20-32 we see the duties given to those who would keep watch over the goods. In verse 26-28 we see what the treasures were. They were gifts dedicated by David and Saul that they got after they would win in war. They made sure the gold, silver, bronze etc. was where it needed to be and that if they needed to spend any of it on the Temple, then they could. We also see men who were given the job of making sure the rest of Israel, outside of Jerusalem was doing what they needed to be doing.
Are you A Gatekeeper and Treasurer?
I like how these guys had jobs that you would not think were that big of a deal. I mean, they were not administering the sacrifices or doing that sort of ministry. The truth is that they had just as an important job because they would need to watch for safety stuff and protection. They would need to make sure nothing was stolen or used improperly. If these guys did not do their job then the other priests could not do theirs. Everyone was a team.
We sometimes think we need to be doing certain things that are ministry like sharing the Gospel and praying for people and that is it. These are musts as a Christian but we also can not neglect the safety of watching our self. In 1st Corinthians 6:19 we read that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Do you watch the gates of your body? Do you make sure nothing unauthorized can come in? Do you watch what you allow to go in your mind? This is something we need to do. Take a look at our inventory of treasure and make sure we are not getting robbed. Watch your gate (your eyes, ears, and mind) and make sure you are protecting it. In order for you to be affective in ministry you need to make sure you are spiritually protected. If you are weak, your ministering to others will be weak. Be careful and a flee from sin. Do not let it get a foot hold in your life because it will affect you spiritually.
